Campaign against gender-based violence held in Kyrgyzstan

A 16-day information campaign «Stop Violence Against Women Now!» is being held in Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration reported.

The campaign started on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and will end on December 10 — the International Human Rights Day.

According to the head of the ministry, Kudaibergen Bazarbaev, the goals of the campaign are to increase society’s intolerance to domestic and gender-based violence, and to increase understanding and awareness of all forms of violence.

Since the beginning of the year, the internal affairs bodies have issued over 8,000 protection orders, 95.1 percent of them — to women, the rest — to men.

The ongoing «Stop Violence Against Women Now!» campaign promotes the idea «Don’t be silent!», draws attention to the problem of multiple forms of discrimination against women, including harassment at work and in public places.

According to the minister, there are 17 crisis centers in the republic for people in difficult life situations and victims of domestic violence.

The Ministry of Labor, Social Security and Migration provides assistance to public organizations in opening and supporting such centers.
