EAEU to support leather and footwear industry of the member states

The Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) decided to zero the rates of import customs duties for a number of chemical products that are used as finishing materials in the leather and footwear industry. Press service of the commission reported.

The Russian Federation has come up with a corresponding initiative. Zero percent rate will be set for three years. These are, in particular, ether alcohols, tannins and polyurethanes in primary forms. Earlier, the EEC Board reduced the rates of duties on paints, varnishes, ready-made aqueous pigments for finishing leather and surfactants for the leather and footwear industry during its meeting on September 22.

The measure is aimed at supporting manufacturers of leather, leather goods and footwear. The main consumers of the goods under consideration in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are organizations — members of the Russian Union of Leatherworkers and Shoemakers, large manufacturers of leather and footwear in the Republic of Armenia (for example, Rassi factory), Belarus (Bobruisk Tannery OJSC), Kazakhstan (Almaty Tannery LLP) and in Kyrgyzstan (Ak-Maral JSC). At the same time, these products are not produced in the union itself.

«Taking into account the fact that light industry is a priority area for the development of cooperative cooperation within the EAEU, effectiveness of the proposed measure will be expressed in improving the conditions of production activities, development of the leather and footwear industry, increase in production volumes and competitiveness of finished products,» a Member of the Board (Minister) in charge of Trade of the EEC Andrey Slepnev said.

The decision of the EEC Council will enter into force in 30 calendar days from the date of its official publication.
