Aksy tragedy anniversary. Sooronbai Jeenbekov makes speech in Bospiek

«Aksy events marked the beginning of a nationwide struggle for freedom and justice in Kyrgyzstan,» said the President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov at a meeting — requiem in memory of those killed in 2002, which was held in Bospiek village on March 17.

The participants observed a minute of silence and read the prayers from the Koran.

Sooronbai Jeenbekov reminded that 17 years ago the Aksi residents held a peaceful demonstration to express their displeasure with the corrupt family and clan rule.

«The government blocked the way for our compatriots who dared to speak out for justice, and used firearms against civilians. As a result, six people died. There were also many wounded. Another person died during a political hunger strike lasting many days. Nevertheless, it did not break the will of the people. On the contrary, the struggle for freedom has intensified many times. Society woke up, the people lifted their heads up. Despite the true reasons were hidden and false information was spread, the truth nevertheless reached the people,» the head of state said.

«Our freedom-loving people have proven that they would no longer allow authoritarian clan rule. The world community has seen that freedom and independence were the highest values for the sake of which the people were ready to sacrifice even their lives. This is precisely the historical significance of the events that took place on March 17, 2002,» Sooronbai Jeenbekov stressed.
