Participants of Aksy events demand status of heroes

Participants of the Aksy events hold a rally at the White House in Bishkek. Protesters demand a meeting with the President.

According to Maksatbek Momunaliev, the people, who came from far away, ask the head of state to equate the participants of the Aksy events of 2002 with the heroes of the April revolution.

«The participants of the April Revolution in 2010 became heroes. They receive benefits, but we do not. The former President Almazbek Atambayev and then the incumbent head of state during the election campaign promised to equate us with the heroes and allocate benefits. Sooronbai Jeenbekov promised to solve our problems if he becomes a president,» Maksatbek Momunaliev said.

He noted that till 2006, thanks to Azimbek Beknazarov, the participants of the Aksy events were paid due attention, and then everyone forgot about them.

«In 2012, Almazbek Atambayev came to us, but he did not give an assessment of those events. We demand the status of «the Hero of Aksy events» at the state level. Now we can not get treatment for free, we are barely treated at district hospitals, and we are required to prove the status in Osh and Bishkek. If we receive it, we can be treated free of charge in all hospitals in Kyrgyzstan,» Maksatbek Momunaliev said.

The Aksy events began after the arrest of Azimbek Beknazarov, the deputy of the Parliament. His voters held protests. On March 17, 2002, law enforcement agencies used firearms against the protesters in the village of Bospiek, Jalal-Abad region. At least six residents of the Aksy district were killed during the tragic events.
