20th anniversary of Aksy events: President addresses Kyrgyzstanis

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov addressed citizens of the country in connection with the 20th anniversary of Aksy events. Press service of the head of state reported.

The President is confident that the Aksy events of 2002 are among the most significant in the recent history of independent Kyrgyzstan and have become a turning point in public consciousness. At that time, contradictions prevailed in the power structures, reforms were ineffective and personal selfish interests triumphed. People took care of themselves, and those in power further isolated themselves from them.

«As a result, the situation in the country worsened, and the tricks of the Akayev family in all branches of government went beyond all conceivable limits. The socio-economic situation worsened, the political system was in a critical situation. Under these conditions, the residents of Aksy district showed genuine courage and heroism, resolutely speaking out against the authoritarian and corrupt Akayev’s regime. The Aksy residents put the interests of the people above their own. They opposed plundering of national wealth and sale of the country’s national assets, not being afraid of the arrogant rule of those in power, who put them in prisons,» Sadyr Japarov said.

He also recalled that several revolutions took place in the history of independent Kyrgyzstan. They were the most difficult and important milestones on the path to democracy, building a free and developed state.

Unfortunately, these events claimed the lives of our ordinary citizens. We will always remember the names of those who died in this tragedy.

Sadyr Japarov

«I pay tribute to the heroism of the Aksy residents who died for the integrity of Kyrgyzstan and the freedom of their people. If 20 years ago foreign researchers and journalists came to Kyrgyzstan to cover the sad events in Aksy, now they come here to see hardworking and hospitable people, such beautiful places as Sary-Chelek, Padysha-Ata, untouched forests and famous plum trees — Aksy land is changing every year,» the head of state stressed.

The President believes that the main goal now is to learn lessons from the past, from difficult but important moments that were a test for the people who put their freedom and independence above all else, and strive for development and prosperity as a democratic country.

«Through setting and achieving these noble goals, we will unite our people, preventing splits and strife in society! Unity is the key to well-being! May there always be peace on our land!» Sadyr Japarov concluded.
