UN prepares for anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights

A campaign 70 days until the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was launched in Kyrgyzstan. The UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative to the Kyrgyz Republic Ozonnia Ojiello stated at a press conference dedicated to the significant date.

According to him, the document is important not only globally, but also for each country separately. «Human rights include our right to freedom from fear, freedom of expression, right to education, health and promotion of social and economic justice, including, to a decent job,» he said.

The Universal Declaration was the first worldwide document to determine the rights that all people have from their birth, regardless of country of residence, citizenship, nationality, religion, sex or age.

The First Deputy Chairman of the Coordination Council for Human Rights under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic, Daniyar Erkimbaev, noted that the protection of human rights was the main goal of all branches of power. According to him, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was opened in Kyrgyzstan exactly 10 years ago.

«It is gratifying that cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and international organizations in the field of human rights is at a sufficiently high level,» he said.

According to Daniyar Erkimbaev, international organizations provided significant support in strengthening democratic institutions, development of civil society, drafting bills in the framework of judicial reform and others in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Universal Declaration was adopted on December 10, 1948.
