At the same time, the number of convicted for terrorism and extremism increased 5.3 times, and prisoners in closed correctional facilities — three times. If in 2010, at least 62 prisoners were serving their sentences in the colonies for such crimes, there were already 191 of them in 2017. At least 14 of them were sentenced to life imprisonment, other 10 — to terms exceeding 20 years.
In total, 422 people were convicted for extremism and terrorism in 2017. In 2010, there were 79 of them. Most of those convicted are people aged 31-45 (48.7 percent).
«Totally 45.3 percent of those convicted of terrorism and extremism are kept in closed-type correctional institutions. 46.6 percent of them committed the crime for the first time,» the report says.
