Kyrgyzstan toughens punishment for drunk driving

The President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov today signed amendments to the Criminal Code. They provide for toughening of punishment for drunk driving and increasing the fine three times for drivers who caused serious damage to the health of a pedestrian. Its author Dastan Bekeshev told about it to 24.kg news agency in details.

According to him, if a driver caused a traffic accident while being drunk, and there are victims, he must be punished by 8-12 years in prison. «If, for example, a driver of a minibus or bus got into a traffic accident, caused it and examination showed that he had alcoholic or narcotic intoxication, then a narcologist would be fined for a large amount. Now the fine amount is 10,000 soms,» the deputy said.

If it turns out that a driver lost control of a car because the transport was not in order, then the motor mechanic would pay the fine. Triple fine, of course.

He explained that if a pedestrian was injured in a traffic accident, then, depending on the severity of the injuries, the culprit of the accident, that is, the driver would have to recover the damage to him or her completely and pay a triple fine.
