Lithuanians, Estonians want to name nameless peaks of Tien Shan

One of the mountain peaks of the Tien Shan can be named Zalgiris in honor of the victory of the Lithuanians over the Teutonic Order in the Middle Ages. The Vice Chairman of Mountain Climbers Association Vladimir Biryukov told at a press conference.

According to him, climbers from Lithuania and Estonia on August 7-17 plan to climb the nameless peaks in Karakol gorge (On Tor pass) and Altyn Arashan gorge included in the mountain ridge of the Central Tien Shan.

As Vladimir Biryukov told, after climbing, having collected all the necessary data on the peaks, the participants plan to ask the government of Kyrgyzstan to name another peak Akstinas — in honor of the mountaineer who died in 1969 in the Caucasus, the third summit — in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Lithuania and name the fourth peak in honor of the director Algimantas Vidugiris, who made a great contribution to the development of Kyrgyz cinema.

As the organizers of the expedition named Karakol 2017 noted, domestic alpinists will take part in conquering the mountain peaks.

«There are more than 5,500 peaks in Kyrgyzstan and not more than 100 of them have official names,» Vladimir Biryukov said.

As he noted, naming of mountain peaks is a complicated procedure.

«Until now, the peak named after Chingiz Aitmatov and the peak of Tolomush Okeyev have not been documented,» he said.
