Kyrgyz elechek included in List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Kyrgyz women’s headdress elechek was included in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The organization reported.

The decision was made unanimously at the 18th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which takes place from December 4 to December 9 in Kasane (Botswana).

President Sadyr Japarov, during a meeting with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay on November 10 in Paris, noted the importance of the traditional women’s headdress elechek for the Kyrgyz people and expressed hope for support for the inclusion of the nomination in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

To date, 705 elements of cultural heritage from all over the world are included in the UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Fifteen elements are from Kyrgyzstan.
