Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev to be deported from Kyrgyzstan

The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek sentenced Chechen activist Mansur Movlaev to six months in prison followed by deportation for illegal crossing of the border of Kyrgyzstan. Office of the court informed 24.kg news agency.

«By the verdict of the Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek dated October 4, Mansur Movlaev was found guilty of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 378 «Illegal border crossing» of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. He was sentenced to imprisonment for six months to be served in a general regime prison colony. The beginning of the sentence is August 20. The period of detention before the verdict enters into legal force is counted as one day in custody for two days of imprisonment,» the verdict says.

Mansur Movlaev remains in custody in the pre-trial detention center of the State Committee for National Security.

In accordance with Article 70 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, after the verdict enters into legal force and the sentence is served, the court decided to expel him from the country.

According to Mansur Movlaev’s lawyer Baktybek Avtandil, the defense insisted on a real sentence because they feared torture by the Chechen security forces.

«As my lawyers said, I am ready to serve my sentence, although the charge brought against me implies a fine. To save my life, I ask to sentence me to two years in prison. I am ready to serve the maximum of what is required under this article. I’m ready to go to prison here for at least ten years to save my life,» Mansur Movlaev said in his last word.

— Mansur Movlaev repeatedly spoke out against human rights violations and political repression in Chechnya. In 2020, he was sentenced to three years in prison. Representatives of the Russian opposition stress that the case is fabricated.

— In 2022, he was released on parole, but was detained by officers of the Shalinsky District Department of Internal Affairs of Chechnya. Movlaev managed to escape from the Russian Federation and was put on the federal wanted list.

—Mansur Movlaev has been in Kyrgyzstan since last year.
