At least €23 million will be allocated for the reclamation of uranium tailings in Mailuu-Suu. The work will be carried out at the expense of grant funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.
«With the financial support of the European Union, from 2017 to 2020, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan conducted an environmental impact assessment and developed a feasibility study for the reclamation of the uranium legacy complex in Mailuu-Suu city. Reclamation of 16 tailings will be carried out, including moving four tailings to a safe place. It is also planned to dismantle and demolish dilapidated buildings, structures and fragments of the former uranium production, to mothball mines and adits. Preparatory, organizational and technical measures have been started,» the statement says.
The ministry notes that this is the third facility in the country where environmental reclamation will be carried out. In December last year, after the successful completion of projects in Shekaftar and Min-Kush settlements, the donor made a decision to allocate grant funds for the reclamation of facilities in Mailuu-Suu. In February 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the €23 million grant agreement.
