Will Kurmanbek Bakiyev be returned to Kyrgyzstan? Answer by Sadyr Japarov

Head of state Sadyr Japarov, in an interview with Kabar news agency, answered the question whether he planned to bring the fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev to Kyrgyzstan.

Sadyr Japarov noted: there is a court decision that Kurmanbek Bakiyev has been convicted.

«For 13 years, the Prosecutor General’s Office sent four requests to Belarus to extradite him (Bakiyev — Note of 24.kg news agency) to us. We were rejected four times. As for my meeting, our most basic law is the Constitution. Paragraph 2 of Article 66 of the Basic Law states that the president ensures the unity of the people and state power. I am doing my duty. Regarding responsibility: everyone will answer to God, history and law for their guilt,» he said.

The head of the Kyrgyz Republic stressed that many write that the meeting was held in order to bring the former president home. «If I wanted to bring Kurmanbek Bakiyev, then we would meet in Bishkek, not in Dubai. Except Bakiyev, everyone can come to the capital. There is a court decision on Bakiyev. If he arrives, he must be taken into custody. We must obey the decision of the court,» he concluded.

Recall, Sadyr Japarov announced a meeting of all the former heads of Kyrgyzstan on February 18. Former MP Ryskeldi Mombekov wrote that the meeting was held in the United Arab Emirates.

Later, Almazbek Atambayev publicly commented on the meeting.

«Yes, meeting of the ex-presidents has taken place. Yes, I attended it. However, I was not informed that any of the ex-presidents would be there. I was told that I was invited to a meeting with the head of state Sadyr Japarov and Kamchybek Tashiev (Chairman of the State Committee for National Security. — Note of 24.kg news agency), so that we could talk on an equal footing, like free people, and forget old grievances. I remember kindness and therefore could not refuse, I even canceled a pre-planned meeting with the Spanish Ambassador. As you know, the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez invited me to undergo treatment, many thanks to him for that,» he wrote.

Ex-head of state Askar Akayev also commented on it. «Personally, I supported this initiative and called on my colleagues to agreement and support for the sake of a prosperous future of Kyrgyzstan and strengthening stability in society,» he said.

It should be noted that the fugitive president Kurmanbek Bakiyev was sentenced by the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan to 24 years in prison.
