Minister: Situation with export of potatoes leaves much to be desired

The situation with the export of potatoes in Kyrgyzstan leaves much to be desired. The head of the Ministry of Agriculture Askarbek Dzhanybekov told at a briefing.

«This year we have increased the potato cultivation area by 2,000 hectares. The gross harvest amounted to 1,243 million tons. So far, we have exported about 22,000 tons to our main, traditional markets in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The export situation leaves much to be desired. The price of potatoes in neighboring countries is still quite low. But there is demand, and the price will rise,» he said.

The minister noted that he twice traveled to Kazakhstan to discuss the issue with the head of the Ministry of Agriculture of the republic and management of Almaty region.

«The Kazakh delegation also came to us. They prepare storage facilities to receive the required volume of products. We are waiting for an increase in the wholesale price for potatoes in neighboring markets to more than 16 soms per kilogram, so that exports can cover not only the costs of agricultural producers, but also bring them profit. These are seasonal price fluctuations,» he said.

According to the minister, the average price for potatoes ranges from 20 to 25 soms per kilogram in the markets of the capital of Kyrgyzstan, depending on the quality and variety.
