Kyrgyzstan to be supported in overcoming poverty

Kyrgyzstan will be supported in the amount of $90 million in overcoming poverty within the framework of the UN WFP program. Press service of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Migration reported.

The minister Kudaibergen Bazarbayev, at the session of the World Food Programme, presented measures to overcome poverty and food security programs implemented with the support of WFP in Kyrgyzstan.

According to him, in just 9 months of this year, over 131,000 poor Kyrgyzstanis or 30,500 low-income families were able to take part in various projects of the ministry. Considering that 105,500 families receive low-income benefits, he believes that the ministry was able to cover almost every third needy family with measures to overcome poverty.

More than 108,000 Kyrgyzstanis took part in projects to improve local infrastructure, for which they received flour and vegetable oil. Other 20,500 people participated in projects under «cash for work (training)» scheme, and 2,900 people opened their own business, concluding a social contract with the state and receiving free funds from the budget.

In addition to $90 million, Kyrgyzstan will receive $15 million for projects aimed at active measures to combat poverty.
