Immunity to COVID-19 to be assessed in Kyrgyzstan

The third stage of the study for the presence of antibodies to COVID-19 among the population begins in Kyrgyzstan. The head of the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for the Control of Viral Infections Zuridin Nurmatov told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the study will be held from October 31 to November 4. About 9,500 people who were examined in the first and second rounds in 2021 and early 2022, respectively, will take part in it.

Some volunteers were not invited this time. But even in this case, Zuridin Nurmatov advises to contact the blood testing point during the specified period. Participation is free.

«The results will help us understand how long antibodies last in people, how they are produced after vaccination against coronavirus, decrease or increase. All these data are necessary for further forecasting of vaccination, planning of anti-epidemic measures in the future,» Zuridin Nurmatov said.

He added that in the absence of herd immunity, another outbreak of COVID-19 is possible. According to the results of the second stage of the study, about 90 percent of the population of the Kyrgyz Republic had antibodies.

The study is carried out jointly with the staff of the St. Petersburg Pasteur Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.
