Second attempt: Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agree to ceasefire

The heads of the State Committees for National Security of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agreed to ceasefire at 4 p.m. Alisher Kozuev, deputy of the Parliament, told 24.kg news agency.

According to him, the deputies received up-to-date information about the negotiations between the heads of the security services of the two countries — Kamchybek Tashiev and Saimumin Yatimov.

Deputies are holding a meeting with representatives of the protesters. According to the deputy, they demand an appropriate response to what is happening on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Shooting began at several sites of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan on the morning of September 16. According to the Border Service of the State Committee for National Security, at about 6 a.m. the Tajik side started firing at the border detachments and positions of the Kyrgyz side. Later, the Tajik side began mortar shelling of border outposts and border villages in Leilek and Batken districts. At least 42 people were wounded. Shooting continues for the third day. As a result of the armed conflict on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, residents of seven villages in Batken and Leilek districts left their homes.

A rally has been held near the parliament building in Bishkek. The participants demand deputies’ reaction to the situation in Batken. Speaker Talant Mamytov held met with them.

The deputies also held an extraordinary meeting, following which they decided to create two headquarters — in the cities of Bishkek and Osh. They intend to collect humanitarian aid for the residents of Batken, as well as to assist in the evacuation of civilians from the villages where hostilities are taking place.
