Droupadi Murmu elected new President of India

The candidate from the ruling National Democratic Alliance of India, Droupadi Murmu, won the presidential elections in the country. Indian Express reports.

Droupadi Murmu won 64 percent of the votes. Her opponent, opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha, won 36 percent of the votes.

Droupadi Murmu became the second woman to hold the presidency in India. The first was Pratibha Patil (2007-2012).

She will take the oath of office on July 25, the day when the term of office of the incumbent President Ram Nath Kovind ends.
