Kyrgyzstan urges neighboring countries to cooperate in water use

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Dinara Kemelova called for constructive and mutually beneficial partnership in use of water and energy resources of the Central Asian region. She announced it at the Central Asian Forum «Regional Water Cooperation,» which is a part of the International Water Conference in Dushanbe.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kyrgyz delegation included representatives of the Water Resources Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the country.

Kemelova highlighted problems associated with the impact of climate change on the region’s water supply, energy and food security. She stressed that «compensatory and economic mechanisms of water use should be developed and introduced in Central Asia.»

During the forum, the Deputy Minister met with the Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe Olga Algayerova and voiced a request for assistance in promotion of Kyrgyzstan’s mountain initiatives at the UN.

At least 45 percent of the glaciers in Central Asia are located in Kyrgyzstan. According to the Central Asian Institute of Applied Geosciences, their area in Kyrgyzstan over the past 70 years has decreased by 16 percent.
