President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov signed amendments to the law on geographical names in the Kyrgyz Republic. Press service of the President reported.
The law was adopted by the Parliament on December 22, 2021.
From now on it is allowed to name and rename administrative-territorial units, local governments and villages after the people who directly participated in the discovery, study, development or foundation of geographical objects; after prominent state and public figures, representatives of science, culture and historical figures who have served to the state, as well as in order to return lost, but widely known in the past and present geographical names to individual objects.
Earlier, at a meeting of the Parliament, deputy Arslanbek Maliev proposed to rename the country. In his opinion, the name of the state sounds like «Kyrgyzstan» or «Kyrgyz Republic», but none of them contains a Kyrgyz word: the ending «stan» is in Farsi, «republic» is a Greek word. «This needs to be changed,» he said.
Deputy Nurzhigit Kadyrbekov suggested renaming the hospitals, in his opinion, the word «oorukana» comes from the word «ooru» — «illness», and therefore has a negative energy.
Sadyr Japarov himself, at a cabinet meeting at the end of December 2021, proposed to rename the town of Isfana in honor of Iskhak Razzakov.
