Askarbek Shadiev sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia

The Pervomaisky District Court considered a criminal case against the former member of Parliament of Kyrgyzstan Askarbek Shadiev.

During hearing of arguments, the prosecutor asked to impose a sentence of 11 years in prison with confiscation of property and serving it in a colony with a reinforced regime. The lawyer Uchkunbek Karimov asked to acquit his client because of the absence of corpus delicti in his actions.

The court sentenced Askarbek Shadiev to 9 years in jail on charges of using his official position against the state’s interests, on illegal crossing of the border — to two years in prison. Having partially added the punishment, judge Emil Kaipov sentenced the defendant to ten years in a penal colony with strengthened security regime in absentia with confiscation of property.

Askarbek Shadiev is accused of abuse of power. According to investigators, he, being the head of the parliamentary committee on international affairs, indicated inaccurate information about whereabouts of $30,000 (the Chingiz Aitmatov Prize, awarded by the IPA CIS). The head of the department of this committee, Arsen Zakirov, has been arrested. Askarbek Shadiev fled the republic and was put on the international wanted list. The trial was held without the main accused.
