President of Kyrgyzstan: There is no need to change the Constitution

«When we talk about amendments to the Constitution, we should not forget about the following points. The Constitution of independent Kyrgyzstan was adopted on May 5, 1993 as a result of lengthy discussions. But, despite this, until today, for 25 years, the Basic Law has been amended ten times. And in 2010, through a referendum, our people voted for the Constitution not to be changed until 2020. Despite this decision of the people, the Constitution was amended again in 2016. Therefore, recalling the events of 2010, respecting the will of the people, I believe that there is no need to amend the Basic Law,» the President said at a scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

Speaking openly, the point is not in the Constitution, but in people who respect or violate the law.

Sooronbai Jeenbekov

According to the head of state, the current constitutional space is enough for our development.

«I can name the improvement of the economy of our state, creation of conditions for business and the increase in direct investment as a very urgent problem. The same fight against corruption will not wait for constitutional changes. Regional development, administrative and territorial reform need laws in the framework of the current Constitution. Improvement of laws on local state administrations and local self-government requires operational work within the framework of the same Constitution,» Sooronbai Jeenbekov outlined.

According to the president, the most pressing and acute issues of the country’s life are raised in Parliament, the deputies are drawing the attention of the public to some pressing problems of public life, which have been forgotten for many years.

«Parliament successfully fulfills all three of its main functions — representative, legislative and supervisory. The last convocations have adequately mastered a new type of activity for our parliament — the functions of party factions,» Sooronbai Jeenbekov said.
