A meeting—requiem, dedicated to the 32nd anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, took place in Bishkek today. Liquidators of the accident, officials, and representatives of the Embassies of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, schoolchildren attended it.
«A terrible technogenic catastrophe occurred on April 26, 1986, which, I hope, will not happen again. Belarus took its main blow upon itself. In the first hours and days, the country had lost a huge amount of arable, forest land,» the Ambassador of Belarus to Kyrgyzstan Andrei Strachko said.
According to him, citizens from all the Union republics were involved in elimination of the disaster. About 2,000 Kyrgyzstanis were among them. «I am sincerely grateful to them. With their participation in record 206 days, a shelter was erected over the power unit that had saved many lives,» said Andrei Strachko.
Bishkek Mayor Albek Ibraimov said that currently there are 278 liquidators of the accident and their widows, 88 their children in Bishkek. «All of them are under the care of the capital’s administration. The Bishkek City Administration, the regional administrations annually provide the participants with targeted social assistance and benefits, and contribute to the improvement of their living conditions. Children of Chernobyl victims did not remain without attention,» Albek Ibraimov said.
«We express our sincere condolences to those who lost their relatives, close people, friends and comrades as a result of the terrible tragedy,» he added.
