Pensioner and single mother detained in Kyrgyzstan for social media posts

75-year-old pensioner Saliya Tashtanova was detained in Tash-Kumyr for a post on Facebook. Azattyk reported, citing a lawyer Toktosun Zhorobekov.

The woman was charged under Article 327 «Public calls for violent seizure of power.»

The lawyer noted that after the arrest of Adakhan Madumarov, she appealed to the President Sadyr Japarov and the head of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev and stated that prices had risen in the country and there was no justice. Afterwards, investigators opened a criminal case against Saliya Tashtanova for «discrediting the president and the head of the State Committee for National Security» and for «calling on the people.» The pensioner has five children.

Another detainee is 44-year-old Chynygul Sherkulova, a resident of Kochkor-Ata. She was also charged under Article 327 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The woman is accused of spreading false information on social media. According to the lawyer, she was a member of Butun Kyrgyzstan party.

«She was the coordinator in Jalal-Abad region and always supported Adakhan Madumarov. The woman was arrested on charges of calling for violent seizure of power. I read the charges against her, there is nothing there. She was simply accused and ordered to be arrested,» Toktosun Zhorobekov said.

As noted, Chynygul Sherkulova is a single mother with three children. By decision of the regional court, the women were taken into custody until November 4.

The State Committee for National Security has not yet commented on their arrest.
