World Bank to allocate $5 million for Kambarata HPP 1 project

The World Bank will allocate $5 million for Kambarata HPP 1 project. Deputy Minister of Energy Taalaibek Baigaziev announced at a meeting of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense, Security and Migration of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan.

At least $3 million is an interest-free loan, $2 million is grant assistance.

Deputy Chingiz Aidarbekov asked how many countries are participating in this project.

«A memorandum was signed between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. There is no agreement on the roadmap yet. According to preliminary data, the share of Kyrgyzstan is 10.34 percent, neighboring countries — 33 percent each. Preparatory work is underway today. For this purpose, the Ministry of Finance allocated 1,550 billion soms for three years. Now they are building a tunnel, a road, a power transmission line, a substation and a bridge,» he said.

Chingiz Aidarbekov resented Kyrgyzstan’s small share. «If a serious situation arises, Kyrgyzstan will be in the minority. If the two countries unite, their share will be 60 percent. Is this in the interests of our country?» he asked.

The Deputy Minister of Energy responded that the total cost of construction is $4.5 billion, and Kyrgyzstan does not have such funds. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will contribute their money.

Aidarbekov suggested transferring the shares to other parties, rather than giving a large number of shares to two countries.
