Not a single criminal case has been initiated against the former president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev. The President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov said in an interview with Kabar news agency.
«Since there is no criminal case, then he was not declared wanted either. Therefore, when we took Kumtor away from Centerra, we specially invited him to testify. We gave a guarantee that he would not be arrested. Even if we did not give the guarantee, there was no legal basis for his arrest. He came, testified, left. His testimony helped us get Kumtor. He corrected the mistakes made when he was the president,» Sadyr Japarov said.
In 2019, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan reported about criminal cases related to family members of the first president Askar Akayev, his relatives and close friends.
Charges brought against Askar Akayev included transfer of land to China and Kazakhstan, shooting at protesters in Bospiek village (Aksy events), persecution of political opponents, usurpation of power, and others.
«The Prosecutor General’s Office issued an order to take measures to bring Askar Akayev to criminal responsibility and put him on the wanted list. However, the Russian authorities refused to extradite the fugitive Kyrgyzstan’s president,» the statement said.
