Askar Akayev plans to return to Kyrgyzstan after he retires

Askar Akayev plans to return to Kyrgyzstan when he retires, but for now he will continue to work at Moscow State University. The former president of the country told reporters about this after a lecture at the Ural State University of Economicsin Yekaterinburg.

«Yes, I am a senior citizen,» he commented on the possibility of return to his homeland. «But I still feel strength, I will continue to work at the Moscow State University.»

Askar Akayev is in Yekaterinburg, where he plans to give lectures at universities and meet with the teaching staff. Askar and Mairam Akayev arrived in Kyrgyzstan in May 2023. It became known that the first ousted president was going to give a lecture at one of the universities in Bishkek. However, some students objected it. They were supported by deputies of the Parliament. As a result, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic canceled Akayev’s lectures at universities.

It was reported that in February 2023 that the President Sadyr Japarov met with all former heads of state. The meeting was held in the United Arab Emirates. It was attended by Askar Akayev, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Roza Otunbayeva, Almazbek Atambayev, and Sooronbai Jeenbekov.

According to Sadyr Japarov, he sat down at the table with all former presidents for the sake of stability, and called on the Kyrgyzstanis to unite.
