Russia to install facial recognition systems on border with Kazakhstan, China

Facial recognition systems will be installed at checkpoints on the border between Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as on the border with China, Poland and Lithuania. Polygon.media reports.

At least 830 million rubles will be allocated for it. The corresponding tender was announced on the public procurement portal.

Video analytics systems at entrances and exits across the state border will be installed at checkpoints on the Russian-Chinese border (Zabaikalsk, Pogranichny and Kraskino), the border with Poland and Lithuania (Bagrationovsk, Mamonovo, Chernyshevskoye), Russian-Kazakh border (Mashtakovo, Orsk, Sagarchin).

The technical design specification says that the system should «automatically analyze face images» to identify drivers. This is necessary to match the person at the entrance and exit from the checkpoint, the document says.

In addition to faces, the system will recognize license plates and car brands. The equipment should be delivered by November 25, 2023.
