At the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, the UN General Assembly declared 2023-2027 «Five Years of Action for Development of Mountain Regions». The initiative belonged to Kyrgyzstan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country reports what has been done to implement the application.
It is specified that the resolution «Sustainable Mountain Development» was adopted at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly. It was supported unanimously without voting. 109 UN member states were co-sponsors.
The initiative to announce «Five Years of Action for Development of Mountainous Regions» belongs to President Sadyr Japarov. He voiced it at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2022.
The final statement was adopted as an official document of the UN General Assembly and calls on the states of the organization to support the resolution.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the announcement of the " Five Years of Action " opens up opportunities for attracting grant assistance and investment in the economy of mountainous countries, including Kyrgyzstan. It will help the development of a «green» economy and technology; create financial mechanisms to strengthen cooperation between mountainous countries. It contributes to the development of science and education in the field of sustainable mountain development, implementation of projects in the field of counteracting the negative effects of climate change, conservation of biological diversity and prevention of natural disasters in mountainous regions.
