Forests cover 6.28 percent of total territory of Kyrgyzstan

The total area of forests in Kyrgyzstan is 1,200 million hectares, or 6.28 percent of the total territory of the republic. The Ministry of Agriculture is working to preserve and increase them. Director of the Forest Service Almaz Musaev told at a press conference in Bishkek.

«This year, about 1,800 million saplings of various trees were planted on 1,177 hectares. To involve the local population in the forest conservation, more than 42 hectares of forestry land were leased to 21,000 tenants. Their task is to develop these territories. We carried out an inventory, as a result of which about 8,000 contracts were terminated,» he said.

According to the specialist, there are 41 forestry enterprises in the country and about 800,000 hectares of forest land are assigned to them. They employ more than 1,500 people.
