Households emit large amounts of sulfur dioxide - study

The level of fine particle emissions from household heating by 2040, if nothing is done, could increase by 60 percent in Bishkek. Aidai Kurmanova, head of UNEP Regional Office said at the presentation of the report «Air Quality in Bishkek. Assessment of emission sources and roadmap for supporting air quality management».

Scientific studies have shown that households emit large amounts of sulfur dioxide. «You can’t see it, but we can smell it,» she said.

According to the study, the Heating and Power Plant’s contribution to ground-level concentrations of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 is less than 1 percent, in part because thanks to the height of the stacks pollutants are dispersed far beyond the city.

Aidai Kurmanova added that road transport also makes a significant contribution to pollution. According to her, if measures are not taken in this area, if catalytic converters are not required, then the level of pollution from them can increase by 63 percent.
