Only 12 people convicted of torture in Kyrgyzstan

Only 12 people have been convicted of torture for 19 years in Kyrgyzstan. Ulugbek Azimov, representative of the Coordinating Council of the Coalition against Torture in the Kyrgyz Republic, announced at a round table in Bishkek.

«Unfortunately, the solving rate of crimes of this kind leaves much to be desired. Not everyone, being in a temporary detention center, pre-trial detention center, places of deprivation of liberty, is ready to write a statement in relation to those who used torture against them. Statistics show that even when a complaint is filed, the investigation refuses to initiate criminal cases in nine out of ten cases,» he said.

The event is held by the Coalition against Torture in Kyrgyzstan in partnership with the National Center for the Prevention of Torture, the Ombudsman’s Institute, the World Organization against Torture and the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek.
