Russian President Vladimir Putin and the heads of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, signed treaties on the accession of new territories to the Russian Federation. The ceremony of signing the treaties with the heads of these territories took place on Friday in the Grand Kremlin Palace.
«People have made their choice, a clear choice. Today we are signing treaties on accession of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. I am sure that the Federal Assembly will support the constitutional laws on the formation of four new regions in Russia, new subjects of the Russian Federation, because this is the will of millions of people,» Vladimir Putin said at the beginning of the signing ceremony.
He stressed that the inhabitants of the four regions are now becoming Russian citizens forever, and promised that the Russian Federation would defend its land with all its forces and means.
According to the laws of Russia, after the signing of the treaty on accession of new territories to the Russian Federation, a conclusion of the Constitutional Court will follow on the compliance of these actions with the Constitution. Then the treaties must be ratified in Parliament.
Referendums on joining Russia were held from September 23 to September 27 in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine. According to their results, 99.23 percent of voters voted for joining the Russian Federation in the DPR, 98.42 percent in the LPR, 93.11 percent in Zaporozhye region, and 87.05 percent in Kherson region.
