Kazakhstan’s government resigns amid mass protests

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev accepted the resignation of the country’s government. The head of state signed the decree today.

«In accordance with Article 70 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, I hereby resolve to accept the resignation of the government,» the decree says.

Alikhan Smailov (the First Deputy Prime Minister in the outgoing government) was temporarily assigned the duties of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

According to the decree, members of the government will continue to fulfill their duties until the approval of the new composition of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The prices for liquefied gas have increased from 60 to 120 tenge per liter since January 1 in Kazakhstan. The next day, residents of Aktau and Zhanaozen started protests against rising prices and blocked roads. Protests are also taking place in several cities of the republic, including Nur-Sultan and Almaty.

A state of emergency was declared in Almaty, and security forces used stun grenades to disperse the protesters.
