At least 607 facts of illegal cutting of trees have been revealed in Kyrgyzstan in 2018. Director of the Department for Forest Ecosystems Development under the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry, Nurlan Zhumaev, told at a press conference.
According to him, the damage from unlawful actions amounted to 6 million soms. Half of the amount was repaid.
«Compared to 2017, the number of illegal felling of trees facts decreased by 200 cases. Our community learns to take care of nature. If earlier people built houses from trees, now they simply use them for heating. Due to the fact that Kyrgyzstan is part of the Eurasian Economic Union, we receive wood from Russia. The cost of our timber has become equal to the Russian one,» said Nurlan Zhumaev.
He added that investigative actions were carried out on the facts of illegal felling of trees in the forests of Dzhety-Oguz and Karakol. At least 20 employees were fired from the state agency.
