Pardon of Omurbek Tekebayev. Presidential Administration considers petition

Petition of the president of the transitional period, Roza Otunbayeva, about the manifestation of an act of goodwill in respect of the leader of Ata Meken party, Omurbek Tekebayev, is being considered by the relevant department of the Presidential Administration of Kyrgyzstan. Further, according to the procedure, it should be studied by the pardon commission. The press secretary of the head of state, Tolgonay Stamalieva, told 24.kg news agency.

According to her, the commission is given a certain period for a decision. If a petition for pardon came from a private person — two weeks, and if from a legal entity — a month. According to the law, the prisoner himself must sign the request for pardon, that is, he must declare his consent and readiness to accept an act of goodwill from the president.

Omurbek Tekebayev himself does not intend to write a petition. But, as his lawyers said, he is grateful and supports the petition of Roza Otunbayeva, endorsed by the leaders of six parliamentary factions. Since a pardon does not mean the removal of a criminal record and it can be annulled only through the court, the politician will seek a review of his case.

Omurbek Tekebayev and Duishenkul Chotonov received eight years in prison with confiscation of property. The courts of all instances found them guilty under corruption article of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In November, the Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested the former State Duma deputy, the main witness in Tekebayev-Chotonov case, a businessman Leonid Maevsky. He was accused of extorting $ 37.5 million for non-proliferation of defamatory information. Leonid Maevsky faces up to 15 years in prison.
