New EU border control system to be in operation by 2020

The Council of the European Union the day before approved the introduction of a new system of registration of entry and exit at the external borders of the Schengen area. Media reported.

«The system of entry and exit will register information about citizens of countries outside the EU crossing the external borders of the Schengen area. It will improve the quality and speed up checks at the borders, as it will automatically calculate the permitted stay of those entering the Schengen area,» the report said.

According to the information, the new system guarantees the accurate identification of persons who have exceeded the permitted period of stay in the Schengen area.

«In addition, the implementation of the system is designed to strengthen the internal security of the EU as well as the fight against terrorism, giving law enforcement structures access to data on the movement of the entrants,» the media reported.
