Less than third of surveyed confess to polygamy among their friends

Less than a third of the surveyed population — 27.3% — admitted that there are families with two or more unofficial wives among their acquaintances or relatives. Sociological survey conducted by Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society NGO says.

It is specified that the survey was aimed at studying the attitude of the population to the idea of legalizing polygamy, put forward by religious figures at the roundtable discussion on June 10, 2017, and also to the degree of protection of the rights of women and girls.

According to the data, respondents living in rural areas more often told about polygamy among friends and acquaintances than the urban residents (30% and 22.8% respectively).

Only every 6th respondent (15.9%) of the total number of respondents is informed that the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic provides for the punishment of men for bigamy and polygamy.

The residents of Osh (100 percent), Naryn (92.3 percent) and the rural areas of Batken (93.4 percent) know least of all about the criminal punishment for bigamy and polygamy.

Slightly more than a third of respondents (33.3 percent) among those, who are aware of the criminal liability for bigamy and polygamy, consider punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to 2 years sufficient.

Approximately the same part of respondents (34.2 percent) believes that it is necessary to toughen criminal responsibility. Only 8.5 percent of respondents believe that the measures of criminal punishment should be mitigated.
