It is noted that he died on Friday morning, June 16, in his own house in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in the south-west of the country at the age of 87. In the last years of his life, the politician was in a wheelchair and had health problems.
«Helmut Kohl has been the longest-serving leader of the post-war Germany. He headed the government of Germany for 16 years — from 1982 to 1998. He is the only German politician who served as chancellor for four consecutive terms. During his leadership in 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic unified into a single Germany. He was also a supporter of the introduction of a single European currency and urged the Germans to abandon the national currency — the Deutsche mark. Kohl led the party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1973–1998," RBK reported.
