BRICS summit in Kazan: Key statements by leaders of some member countries

The next BRICS summit started in Kazan on October 22. It is attended by leaders of 36 countries and representatives of six international organizations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also arrived in the capital of Tatarstan to participate in the BRICS meeting.

The President of Russia opened the meeting in expanded format. Vladimir Putin delivered a report at the summit. Key statements:

  • The centers of activity are now shifting towards developing markets, while the debt burden is growing in developed countries. Implementation of the UN sustainable development agenda is «stalling.»
  • Launch of the BRICS consultation mechanism on WTO issues will help develop a common position of countries on the formation of fairer rules of the game in the global economy and reform of the international financial system.
  • A special «grain exchange» will appear in BRICS, which will help to form fair indicators of grain prices in the world, and can subsequently be transformed into a full-fledged commodity exchange.
  • It is proposed to create a new investment platform in BRICS, launch a platform for fair competition, and a separate platform for precious metals and diamonds.

«It is important to promote the BRICS peace agenda for the sake of protecting common security. Only the implementation of the concept of common, joint security will help to find the path to universal security. In the context of the protracted Ukrainian crisis, China, Brazil and the states of the global South have created a group of «friends of peace». It is aimed at uniting large voices in support of peace,» he said.

«The world majority is unhappy with the fact that the United States has turned its currency into a weapon, BRICS is the path to weakening the hegemony of the dollar,» Iranian leader Masoud Pezeshkian said at the summit in Kazan.

He also called on BRICS members to take practical steps to prevent some countries from imposing sanctions on others in the future.

«BRICS is a reverse Marshall Plan, when developing economies support the developed world,» Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said via video link.

He also spoke about the possibility of creating a financial system that will reduce costs in commercial relations.

«It is now necessary to create alternative monetary relations between our countries. We are not talking about replacing our domestic currency. But when we talk about a multipolar world, we have to create a financial system, we must seriously discuss this topic,» the head of Brazil said.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi noted at a narrow-format meeting that BRICS inspires the world to move towards positive cooperation. He also stated that «cross-border payments will only play into the hands of our partnership.»

«India highly values ​​global cooperation in the BRICS format, which has become one of the key platforms for dialogue and discussion of global agenda topics,» Narendra Modi voiced his position earlier.

The BRICS states adopted a final declaration following the summit in Kazan. It will be sent to the UN as a joint document.
