Implementation of strategy for adaptation to climate change discussed in Almaty

The working group discussed the implementation of the Regional Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central Asia at the conference (CACCC-2024) in Almaty.

The strategy, previously adopted by five countries of the Central Asian region — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, contains a mechanism for cooperation to overcome the negative consequences of climate change and implement adaptation measures in the region until 2030.

As Torsten Brezina, GIZ Director of Regional Programs in Central Asia, told reporters, the main thing is that countries take responsibility for implementation of the document.

«The first step has been taken — not just expert groups, but the governments have approved it at the state levels. Our role is to facilitate this process. But if countries do not take responsibility, there will be no result. Therefore, we are looking at how to strengthen the capabilities of countries in implementing this strategy,» he said, noting that Kyrgyzstan is one of five countries that actively participated in the process of adopting the document.

«If we are talking about water resources, then the Kyrgyz Republic plays an important role in this regional issue. Plus, the issue of glaciers. We all say that their volumes are decreasing, but it is very important to monitor and predict the situation. Therefore, we support Kyrgyzstan in this direction,» Torsten Brezina added.
