There are 255 people sentenced to life imprisonment in prisons of Kyrgyzstan. The Deputy Justice Minister Orozbek Sydykov said at a meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliament.
The deputies discussed amendments to the Criminal Code and recognition of the Law on General Principles of Pardon as invalid.
According to the document, which is initiated by the Ministry of Justice, sentenced to life in prison have the right to apply for pardon every five years, not 10, as provided for in the current legislation. If the head of state approves it, the life sentence is reduced to 20 years. Others convicted of less serious crimes can apply after one year of serving their sentence.
