MP proposes to toughen responsibility of children for elderly parents

Deputy of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan Tazabek Ikramov proposes to toughen the responsibility of able-bodied children for their elderly parents. He presented the corresponding bill at a meeting of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial, Legal Issues and Regulations of the Parliament.

The MP proposes to amend the Criminal and Family Codes and the Law on State Civil Service and Municipal Service.

Today it has become a norm to leave elderly parents in a nursing home.

Tazabek Ikramov

«The number of old people in social institutions is growing. They get there for various reasons, but mostly children leave them there. A court decision is needed to bring to responsibility citizens who left their parents without care. But in practice, no parent files a statement against a child. With the adoption of this bill, when a person enters a nursing home, the management of the institution automatically sends a statement to law enforcement agencies, and the case is considered in court,» he said.

The deputy proposes to increase the fine from 50,000 to 100,000 soms if a citizen is held liable for leaving a parent in a nursing home. Such a norm is stipulated in Article 179 «Evasion of children from the maintenance of parents» of the Criminal Code.

Committee members approved the bill in the first reading.
