European Union and WHO launch new healthcare project

The European Union and WHO are launching a new project aimed at preventing diseases and strengthening the healthcare system in Kyrgyzstan. The EU Delegation reported.

The project with a budget of €10 million will be implemented in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It aims to mitigate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increase the long-term resilience of healthcare systems by strengthening national immunization programs and health information management systems.

«The EU and WHO will continue our partnership to strengthen the healthcare system in Kyrgyzstan after great success in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,» said Hans Farnhammer, Head of Cooperation for the EU Delegation.

Joana Madureira Lima, Special Representative of the WHO Regional Director in the Kyrgyz Republic, added that the support of the European Union would help to eliminate inequities in the field of immunization and would strengthen information management systems.

Initially, the funds will be used to address issues such as scaling up COVID-19 vaccination, developing and implementing COVID-19 vaccination and routine immunization plans, upgrading the skills of healthcare and vaccination professionals, and strengthening information systems on immunization. In addition, the project will strengthen the surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases and the use of digital solutions to prevent and respond to future outbreaks of such diseases.

The funds will also be used to improve data and digital healthcare systems in line with the recently adopted regional digital health action plan 2023-2030, strongly supported by the countries of Central Asia.
