Agriculture Minister promises no shortage of flour in Kyrgyzstan

Shortage of flour and grain feed is not expected in Kyrgyzstan. The Minister of Agriculture, Askarbek Dzhanybekov, announced.

According to him, the annual demand of the population for food wheat today is 768,000 tons.

«This year we are reaching the level of 650,000 tons. This wheat is planned for feed, processing and seeds. The expected volume can cover 65-68 percent of domestic demand. Last year, the figure was about 40 percent,» Askarbek Dzhanybekov told.

The official added that the missing part will be imported from Kazakhstan and Russia.

«There will be no shortage of food wheat, flour and flour products,» the minister stressed.

He added that 6,700 tons of imported high-yielding seeds for sowing in 2023 are stored in the warehouses of the Material Reserves Fund. The ministry purchases seeds of winter crops. In the future, the ministry will not import seeds from other countries, but will leave grain for sowing from a new crop.

On August 23, the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan took the initiative to ban the export of wheat and its mixture with rye (meslin) outside the EAEU for six months. According to the draft resolution, the restrictions will not affect re-export, transit, as well as humanitarian assistance provided by the Cabinet of Ministers. The measure is aimed at ensuring food security and stabilizing market prices.

The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan reported that restrictions on the export of grain and flour will be lifted in the country due to good yields from September 10.

Russia announced in March that the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union would receive quotas for the purchase of grain. To do this, each state had to submit production-consumption balances by March 25, 2022, on the basis of which quotas were formed. Kyrgyzstan has contracts with Russian suppliers on import of 28,000 tons of food grains.
