The first visit of the UN expert group on discrimination against women and girls in Kyrgyzstan has started. Office of the organization in Bishkek reports.
According to it, the experts arrived to assess progress and problems in achieving gender equality and eliminating discrimination against women and girls in the country.
«The working group is particularly interested in legislative reforms and policies that have been implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic to promote women’s rights and substantial gender equality, as well as to address structural discrimination,» the office said.
Experts will look at all aspects of women’s lives: political and public, economic and social, family and cultural, health and security, including gender-based violence against women and girls as discrimination and barriers to access to justice.
«We are interested in learning about achievements and promising practices as well as the local historical and cultural context, existing gaps and challenges in a spirit of constructive dialogue,» the UN office added.
The meetings will be held in Bishkek, as well as in Issyk-Kul and Osh regions.
Special attention will be paid to women and girls who face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, including those from rural areas, migrants, refugees, religious and ethnic minorities, those affected by conflict, LGBTI, women and girls with disabilities.
During the visit, experts will meet with national and local authorities, women and girls, civil society organizations, scientists, journalists, elected women leaders, UN entities and other international stakeholders. The delegation includes Melissa Upreti, chair of the working group, and Elizabeth Broderick, a member of the working group.
