Draft law on right-hand drive vehicles submitted for public discussion

A draft law on amendments to the law on road traffic in Kyrgyzstan has been submitted for public discussion.

The amendments, initiated by the deputy of the Parliament Marlen Mamataliev, if adopted, will return the possibility of registration of the right-hand drive vehicles.

«Right-hand drive vehicles previously imported and used in our country have the best technical characteristics, as they mostly come from Japan, where quality and comfort are in the first place. The year of manufacture and other technical indicators definitely look more favorable than left-hand drive vehicles coming to our domestic market from other countries. Moreover, use of newer cars will have a positive influence on the ecology in general and will solve the problem of smog in cities of national importance», the statement says.

Deputies propose to allow import of right-hand drive cars into the country and their registration on one condition — obligatory installation of overtaking camera with a monitor.

Deputy Cholpon Sultanbekova said last week that the Parliament would prepare a bill to lift the ban on the import of right-hand drive cars. Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov spoke out against this initiative.

It should be noted that it has been forbidden to officially import and register right-hand drive cars in the Kyrgyz Republic since the summer of 2015.
