CEC to decide fate of Omurbek Babanov today

The members of the working group of the Central Election Commission made the third warning to the presidential candidate Omurbek Babanov. The CEC member Gulnara Dzhurabaeva informed 24.kg news agency.

According to her, the working group met yesterday and, without waiting for the conclusion of the GKNB experts on the content of the speech of Omurbek Babanov at the meeting with the voters in Osh, considered the issue of gross violation of the rules of campaigning by the politician.

In total, Omurbek Babanov received 13 complaints after his speech in Osh at micro district On-Adyr. The applicants accused him of stirring up ethnic hatred.

Earlier, member of the Central Election Commission Nazarali Aripov explained that the video with the candidate’s speech was sent for examination to the State National Security Committee (GKNB), since the CEC is not authorized to give such assessments.

«But without waiting for the results, the working group met yesterday, and six members voted for issuing a warning. Yes, there is a norm in the provision providing for the removal from the race for gross violations, for example, of criminal legislation. But the final decision will already be taken by the CEC members at a meeting that will take place today. That is, I don’t rule out that there may be an initiative to cancel registration of Omurbek Babanov as a candidate for the presidency,» Gulnara Dzhurabaeva explained.

According to the law, the Central Election Commission can’t deprive a candidate of the opportunity to participate in the election no later than three days before the voting date.
