Human rights activist tells about violations in filing lawsuits against media

Today, a human rights activist Cholpon Dzhakupova told at a Freedom Forum what rules the defenders of the President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev violated.

According to her, over the past month, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Kyrgyzstan has filed three suits (at 42 million soms) against Azattyk and Zanoza.kg. There was also filed a lawsuit at 2 million soms against 24.kg news agency and Rita Karasartova. It was accepted, despite the fact that it was improperly drawn up.

In case of dissemination of information, discrediting honor of the President, the Prosecutor General’s Office can apply to the court if the other measures of prosecutor’s response had no effect. But the Prosecutor General’s Office did not do that.

«I am far from thinking that the Prosecutor General wants to belittle the President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev. I want him to say what words inflicted him a mental harm," the human rights activist noted.

She added that the lawsuits against the media are filed not because of analytical articles, but for publication of interviews that the authorities did not like.
