UN Special Rapporteur calls on not to persecute Aziza Abdirasulova

UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor calls on the authorities of Kyrgyzstan to stop persecuting human rights defender Aziza Abdirasulova. She posted it on her X account.

According to her, information is received that Aziza Abdirasulova in Kyrgyzstan is facing threats and online harassment after the president’s statement about the work of the NGO she heads.

«The government must stop the smear campaign, honor her more than 20 years of work and investigate the threats,» Mary Lawlor posted.

The founder and head of the human rights center Kylym Shamy Aziza Abdirasulova left Kyrgyzstan due to threats. «I was not ready to leave my homeland. I have a four-year-old grandson in my care. But after various provocative calls and threats, I had to leave. I have suffered two strokes and am not ready to go to prison,» Aziza Abdirasulova said.

On December 21, speaking at the third People’s Kurultai, President Sadyr Japarov criticized some media outlets and the human rights organization Kylym Shamy. Later, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Edil Baisalov said that Aziza Abdirasulova could return to her homeland. She is not in any danger.
